Righteous Lot! this fool of Abram’s day,
Who neighbored sin in Sodom’s wickedness,
Led by the eye to choose its pleasantness
Despite the pits of tar along its way.
Oh helpless man, soon seized by kings at war,
As cattle captured, ‘til his uncle’s hand
Extracted him from in the captor’s land
While silencing their God-abhorring roar.
This kinsman priest would later plead, distraught,
To spare this man - his only merit this:
A grief for all the sin in Sodom’s rot.
And here am I, not Abram as I thought,
But as the man then dragged from wrath’s abyss
By Him who gave to me His righteous lot.
